Preserving Your CD/DVD Investment

Being able to backup, that is copy, dvd and cd-rom and dvd disks is at the center of a huge intellectual property battle. Needing a backup is a valid concern since disks are easily damaged. One way to avoid the whole problem of backups and unreadable software is to take better care of your disks, and to train your kids to do the same with their expensive game disks.

Prevent Problems

-Never touch the disk anywhere but on the rim or using the center hole.

-Avoid leaving disks around on a hard surface. This makes it easy for them to get scratched. The most important thing is to put the disk away the second it comes out of the CD player drawer. Use a plastic jewel case or a wallet.

-Store the disks upright, not lying on their sides in a stack.

-Avoid high humidity, high heat, intense sunlight and smoky or dusty environments.

-When labeling, use a non-solvent-based marker on the label side of the disk. Do not affix adhesive labels to the disk.

Clean properly

-Most important—always clean using a soft cloth and wipe from the center to the edge. Although wiping in a circle is probably what comes naturally, it can create scratches in the same direction as the grooves, confusing the laser and causing playback problems.

-Make sure the cloth is clean. If there’s any small hard piece of dirt or sand, it can scratch the disk.

-If you’ve got serious dirt or smudges, use isopropyl alcohol or methanol or CD/DVD cleaning detergent.
